Hold Still! Gluing the unusal

Author: Furniture Reporter  |  Category: News

So made an unusual shape? Not sure how to stick it together? First step is to make sure it goes together without force clamps should only be used to hold stuff together while the glue dries (and it make the glue up so much easier).

Step two is to pick your method of clamping- clamps (g, f, sash, bar etc), or pegs, rubber bands, rubber strips (old bicycle inner-tubing) there are plenty of options, this is only what I have tried if you put your mind to I’m sure you can come up with some more (please comment or email them to me with your name so credit can be given). If you know any instrument makers ask them for advice as gluing together instruments is very tricky and often done in a way which most people wouldn’t think of. Do a couple of dry runs (no glue) to find out what works best for the situation and leave it for a hour or more if your worried about it moving/slipping.

If your using clamps consider attaching small angular block to your work as a way of improving grip and position, these can be cut and planed of latter.

Step three do a dry run (if you haven’t done one already) keep in mind how fast your glue sets and that it will become slippery and/or tacky when you add glue.

Good luck and remember its not what you make is what you learned making it.
