Eero Aarnio and 1960s Furniture

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News
These great iconic chairs from the 1960s are all designed by the great Finnish designer Eero Aarnio.

Aarnio believed that design was and should be about constant change and renewal. Designers should not be complacent and fall into habits. They should always be challenging and seeking new avenues and ways of achieving different results than those from the past, whether ancient or relatively recent.

However, this did not mean that Aarnio was comfortable with the consumer led throwaway culture of the 1960s. His furniture tended to be of a high quality and was built to last.

Much of the furniture shown here is actually fibre-glass rather than the plastic that would have been expected for the plastic age that was the Sixties. Perhaps more surprisingly, the bases are of moulded aluminium, making for a secure seat in the volatile and changeable decade in which it was produced.

I must admit to loving this type of furniture and always have. it is elegant and sophisticated in a Space Age context. The moulding is clean and organic and can you not just see yourself curled up in one of those ball chairs? Apparently some of them had built in speakers so that you could listen to music while you read or dozed. Now how cool is that!
I was born too late to take advantage of the originals. Fortunately some of them are still around in good quality ‘retro’ shops and there is a good trade in modern copies. A good place to start would be the Regency Shop or Retro Republic two good examples of everything retro or modern versions of such, but there are plenty more so shop around.

What to do with Vintage Windows & Doors

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

There is something charming about older windows. We’ve all seen mirrors set into window frames and they have become fairly popular — especially among “shabby chic” decor. Wondering what else you can do with a cast off window? Take a look at THIS site.

I ADORE the simple window coffee table! I have only beginner skills at woodworking but I think that even I could manage that one.

The mini greenhouses, however, are a work of art. Unfortunately, they are also well beyond my skill level.

I have yet to scrounge a window or door but now I may find it hard to pass one up again. I think I need to have a crack at making myself a coffee table.

Me relaxing on my bed at my SL home :)

For the first time in Second Life I have a home of my own. Mow is letting me stay on his sim until the end of the month. If at the end of the month I am totally in love of the concept of my own place still (because I definitely am right now), I will start a search for another place to live.

Tonight I got lost in the joy of building. I had to try to make my own furniture because nothing I had was what I wanted. Ultimately I decided to go with pre-made freebie furniture that I could edit to suit my needs, but I intend to keep building there and learn through trial and error in the privacy of my own place. I’m personalising the walls with my own art as suits at this point as well, which feels great and instantly makes it feel like a home to me.

The building itself is premade and there is a prim limit but the privacy and freedom within those walls is what I need the most. I’ve already had one intruder but he left after a bit of an explanation that he was in someone’s home, so that was fine. Plus I have a security orb anyway ^^

So if you happen to have any high quality freebies, especially of the furniture and texture variety, feel free to drop them on me in-world. I will be making a fair few things from scratch but it will be nice having somewhere quality to sit while I rest between projects as well )
