The beginning is the end is the beginning…

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

In the beginning there was an idea and that idea was “One day I will restore the dollhouse that my grandfather made for me”…

The idea floated around, bumping up against other ideas like “I would like to learn to kayak”, “Watching Das Boot could be interesting” and “I would like to find that recipe for Vension with chocolate sauce I saw on tv that one time”…

Sometimes the idea bumped into similar ideas like “I really have to get that dollhouse out of my Dad’s house”, “Gosh my dollhouse looks at bit dirty and neglected”, “I wonder if those amazingly cool miniature shops in Covent Garden  and Kings Road, Chelsea still exist…I still have the catalogue from the Kings Road shop…” and “Wow, a fountain with water lilies and goldfish dammit only 60 pounds…why didn’t I buy it in 1996? Even though my dollhouse doesn’t have a garden…it’s still cool!”

For a long while…nothing much happened.

Then I went back to the UK in 2006 to discover the shop in Covent Garden doesn’t still exist and later that year (after my finances had recovered slightly from the trip and after a significant amount of wine) I dug out the catalogue for the Kings Road shop and googled the answer.

Turns out it doesn’t still exist (well I did pick the catalogue up in 1996), but in the course of uncovering this fact I also discovered the great and wonderful world of ebay where it was possible to purchase dollhouse furniture and accoutrements from such exotic locals as the Americas, the UK and…Willeton in Western Australia.

Unfortunately I have yet to discover where I can find the fountain with water lilies and goldfish which so enraptured me in the Kings Road shop’s catalogue.

Casting that minor point aside, in the course of my journeys I have purchased:

  1. Two lounge room sets (discovered the perfect one cream satin set after I had already bought a pink damask one because it was cheap but cool.)
  2. Three fireplaces (discovered the perfect set of two wood ones having already purchased a white metal one…it’s a continuing theme)
  3. A master bedroom suite
  4. A billiard room suite (who could say that a billiard room is not more important than a kitchen?)
  5. Three kitchens (long story, will explain in a post about my discovery of the different scales that exist in the great wide world of miniatures)
  6. A nursery set (it had a toy dollhouse in it, a dollhouse in a dollhouse - geddit!)
  7. A cocktail tray with a bottle of gin and two glasses (for the billiard room, mais bien sur)
  8. A trundle bed
  9. A miniature working pull train for the nursery
  10. Silk persian rugs
  11. Paintings  (Some nice pre-raphaelites for the walls. A picasso and some statuary are being considered too…)
  12. Vases of flowers (only the essentials in life)

There are probably other miscellaneous things I have purchased on the way plus there are the pre-existing miscellaneia that I already possessed…more about these later.

Outdoor Area Rugs

Outside Doormats in Colorful Woven Plastic

Outdoor Area Rugs

What to consider when buying an outdoor area rug
Size, shape, color, woven, plastic, plain or patterned, luxury or cheap disposable are all questions you should ask yourself before deciding which outdoor area rug to purchase.

Size and Shape
Measure the dimensions where you will place the area rug with all of the furniture in position. Consider how close the edges will be to all of the furniture legs as well as the traffic pattern where the rug will go. An area rug that is placed too close to furniture can make even an outdoor room appear small and cramped. If the rug is being placed in a heavy traffic area you will need to consider the durability of the rugs material and how well it will stay in position.

Keep in mind that when having an outdoor kitchen or a grill, leave enough buffer space between the rug and the cooking area to prevent the area rug from being repeatedly soiled from food preparation and cooking.

An oval or round area rug that is approximately the same size as a rectangular or square rug will appear to be smaller and may be a better overall enhancement for the space. The round edges will help to soften the appearance of the entire outdoor room.

Color and Pattern
Choosing an attractive color and pattern for your outdoor area rug is just as important as matching the color schemes of an indoor room. If the outdoor furniture is already in place or you are purchasing the furniture at the same time as your rug, you will want to coordinate the colors of the furniture cushions along with the outdoor throw pillows and lamp shades on any outdoor lighting you may purchase.

Also consider the amount of foot and pet traffic the area rug may receive and what color and pattern will work best at camouflaging any soiling.

Woven or Plastic?
Outdoor area rugs are manufactured in a wide and varied range of materials. Plastic is typically not the first material that comes to mind when you are considering an indoor rug but for many situations plastic is the perfect choice for any outdoor area rug.

New manufacturing methods have made plastic area rugs soft and subtle to the touch even when walking on them barefoot.  The diversity and intensity of the colors in an outdoor area rug will give the space a pop and set your outdoor space apart from the norm.

Woven or power loomed rugs can produce a flat weave area rug for a cabana beach house look or one with a low to medium pile will give a softer more elegant appearance.

Luxurious or Cheap Disposable?
There will always be an association between how much or how little you pay and the quality of the outdoor area rug you take home. But in some instances an inexpensive rug may be the smarter choice because of the situation in which it will be placed.

If you need to have an area rug around an outdoor kitchen or hot tub or a heavy traffic area that will frequently be trampled on by dirty shoes, it is probably better to go with a less expensive area rug and replace it more often. Spend the most of your budget on the area rug that will be the focal point and centerpiece of your outdoor room.

Care and Maintenance
Most all outdoor woven or fabricated area rugs are manufactured with some type of manmade fibers. They are extremely durable, very stain resistant, and can easily be spot cleaned or cleaned with a brush and hose. After a heavy shower you may need to turn back the edges to speed up the drying process, but that’s about all the care they will generally need.

Consider these suggestions before you buy your outdoor area rug, and you will have a much greater chance of satisfaction with your purchase.

Home Infatuation offers many options of outdoor area rugs in choices of color, patters, size and shape. You may find this and other fantastic outdoor living products when visiting www.homeinfatuation.com.

Stop Deforestation by Reducing Timber Product Consumption

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

When I travel through many of the most beautiful parts of a country which is partially forested, I can see often the results of cutting of trees in vast swathes across hillsides. I then think to my self how great it would be if this cutting would stop, and we as a species would be sure we had preserved enough of the rainforest (instead of the mad dash to log we see now).  Many people around the world, who are changing the way they see nature and are coming to appreciate the importance and value of preserving natural places, no doubt share this feeling that we need to maintain a reserve and store of natural forest.  Home to diverse species,  ecosystems, a network of life which exists parallel to humanity, these places are of such value that they must be preserved, protected and allowed to grow wild.

Recalling a discussion of the impact of logging activity in that country, I realized that if I had traveled here years ago I would see a much more natural, full forest- full of vitality with wildlife living freely. It’s possible to see the effect of human demand for wood when traveling in many countries, and is reinforced by coverage in newspapers and in conversation when traveling.

Yet as a species humans still are consuming more and more wood - fueling logging. The Amazon rainforest continues to decrease in size year after year. Humanity would be wise to stop the decrease in size first, then figure out how much more deforestation is safe. The issue is linked to that of global warming through the proposed mechanism of reabsorption of CO2 by forests.

Much attention has been given to getting certified timber, but it seems that the one of the best ways to resolve this problem is for people to try to reduce their use of wood products. If people would as a group attempt to use less wood, and find wood substitutes, and recycle so that wood products can be re-used, a lot of the strain on the forests could be reduced.

Even simple things can make such a difference. Take the example of China, where the use of disposable chopsticks in an unsustainable way has no doubt led to much deforestation. A global taste for wood products- in houses and furniture, continues to drive unsustainable logging. What if consumers, just said “no”? “I prefer to have a living forest”.

It is often not discussed, but the consumption of a great deal of meat, which is of origin in the South American region, could lead directly to deforestation of forest regions. A great deal of forest land has been cleared for the purpose of grazing. Therefore, a vegetarian diet (or a reduced meat diet) can be another way for people to reduce impact on the rain forest.

Citizens both locally and internationally can also organize to influence the situation and advocate for sustainable natural forests.  One thing which could be impacted through campaigning is the vast burning of the Amazon rainforest- simply uncontrolled burning which destroys forest and contributes to global warming.  This senseless burning must be stopped.  I am aware that there may be a natural level of forest fire, but the level of burning now is past the natural level, I think.  Probably other major forest regions also suffer from unnecessary burning.

So, what I’m proposing is to try to reduce the amount of deforestation by individual and collective effort to reduce the use of wood products, and organize where direct change in consumption patterns will not help.

I consider the need to protect the great forests of the planet as one of the most important things that people should be talking about and working on. The value of these natural places is priceless. We have to search more for ways to preserve and protect these places, even expanding and strengthening them from their current status.

So, opening up the idea for debate from readers:  do readers think that reducing the consumption of wood products would be an effective way to reduce human impact on forests?  Would readers consider doing this themselves in order to make a difference?
