Canapele fixe la set

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

Hampton & Sons Trade Catalogues

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News
Over the last couple of centuries, hundreds if not thousands of trade catalogues have been produced. All are of varying quality and quantity, but a good example of a well produced catalogue were those published by the London based company Hampton & Sons.
Hampton & Sons were well known for the quality and versatility of their publications. Their trade catalogues showed examples of interiors in various styles, many of which were part of their ‘artistic interiors’ range.

Artistic interiors was a reference to a middle class affectation whereby interiors would take on a very lukewarm ideal of Bohemianism, not too shocking, but just colourful and unusual enough to qualify as unconventional to the more conservative members of Victorian society.

It was all fairly innocent and harmless and very far from any real Bohemian lifestyle. However, Hampton & Sons would supply this section of middle class affectation, as they would their more conventional customers, with furniture, carpets, curtains, blinds, ceramics, glass, and metal ware, all of which would be advertised within their glossy trade catalogues.

An example of a couple of pages of one of their 1892 catalogues are illustrated here.

As can be seen, Hampton & Sons did not stint on the quality of their publication. They wanted their merchandise to appear at its best and for the colour range to be made fully available to their customers and suppliers whether they be traditionally minded or part-time Bohemian.

Furniture Hunt

If anyone is wondering about the non-existence of this week’s ‘Looks of the Week’, it’s really because I could not find anything awesome over the Internet. What with it being pretty hot here over the past week and most of the usual inspiring blog owners experiencing winter; most of the dark, thick stuff just didn’t do it for me.

But anyways, without any luck on the fashion side of life, I was pretty busy with a furniture hunt. The lunar new year is round the corner (3 weeks to be exact!) so a new sofa is needed to replace the current age-old one and I had to get a new wardrobe because the one I share with my sis is almost bursting.

Managed to get a teak 3-seater for the living room from here. I love lots of items in the showroom but no point buying them because I happen to live in a 4-room flat in a relatively new housing estate and as most Singaporeans know, flats in new estates are like mouse-holes. Pathetically small. No luck on my side of the wardrobe search. I did manage to find one that was the most reasonable of the lot; but it ended up being too wide by 2, 3 inches. I’m still going to order it anyways because I desperately need a solution to my sis and my overloaded wardrobe. Now, I just need to work a way around my room, which has quite an odd configuration, then I can add a new member.

I love this blog. The photos of creative interior design are awfully lovely. Very fascinating – makes me want to have my own pad asap.

Saving up for my home,
Linzi
