More Ideas for the Craft Room

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

I found some more spaces and ideas that I like.  Here are a few more pictures to add.  I am using this post as my inspiration board.  Tell me what you think:

Love the color

I love these colors!  I am looking for the right shade of lime green for the paint color.  I think the use of red here is very daring!

I like the use vintage objects in this one.  However, this one makes me feel cluttered.  I would like to have clean lines and simple storage.

shelves

I love this open shelving unit.  You can find many options at IKEA.  I would love to make the trip to the IKEA in Texas (that’s where the closest store is to me) with a long list of items needed for the house.  IKEA is awesome!

Here are some more seating options I am contemplating.  My husband is not really sold on this style.  He is envisioning late night XBOX parties and movie nights, so he wants a nice big comfortable couch.  We are going to have to marry comfort and style.sofa-2

I would like to have 3-4 of these to pull up to a work table.  I envision hosting scrapbooking parties!

Anyone who knows me in “real life” knows that I have a whole lot of other things to do besides blogging about Obama and racial ambiguity on the internet.  I’m talking about RESPONSIBILITIES people- you know, like raising a child, running a household…stuff like that.  Were it not for the child I would probably have been out running these streets for the past 5 years, instead of keeping the home fires burning like I’ve learned to do so well.

During the past year,  I have achieved a level of domesticity that has surprised even me. Last summer I finally moved into a really nice space, a space that deserves good furniture and curtains.  I am trained as an artist, so naturally I enjoy the decorating aspects of home-ownership the most (much more than say- the orgazational aspects). Because I am a nerd, I must research all endeavours thoroughly before diving in.   I research furniture retailers to find the best quality and price, I read books like Apartment Thearapy,  I peruse magazine like Domino and Real Simple.

Occasionally, my domestic nerdery is rewarded by finding the perfect home item, for the perfect price.  This week between the the recession in combination with the after Christmas sales- I recieved the best gift ever from the retails Gods- I purchased about $500 worth of curtains for about $100.  And I’m not talking about stuff I bought just because it was on sale, I’m talking about curtains in the exact color and size I was looking for.  Pier One and West Elm- We salute you.

Not my stuff- but this is an example of some of the colors I am using in my house.

P.S. Check out this this amazing baby nursery:

Home Theater Stand

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

My husband treated himself to a home theater system. It was due to be delivered and we were without a stand to place the TV upon. It was perfect luck that we found this sitting on the curb.

It is very ugly, very dated but very solid and the perfect size and free. It was time to get to work.

The two drawers on the lower left side were in bad shape. This was not a problem since I wanted a shelf or two to put theater components upon. The bottom was reinforced with a thin wood board to hold the weight of the electronics. There are also two drawers behind the doors which will be handy to hold DVDs and other bits.

The first thing I did was to remove all the old brass hardware. Some of it (the fancy plates around the knob pulls) had to be pried off with a thin screwdriver.

Next, I filled all the holes with wood putty and let it dry. After a bit, I brought out my sander and hit the whole piece twice — once with rough paper, then with finer paper. I had to sand the inside, recessed part of the doors, by hand.

I did not prime this piece but put on two coats of black satin oil paint. I sanded lightly between coats.

After the final coat had dried, I antiqued the piece by gently sanding the corners and other areas where wear would occur naturally. Then the whole item got a coat of furniture wax and a vigorous buffing. Finally, new hardware completed the project.

The result:

Transformed from ugly to servicable in under a week.
