And now, love on the Horizon…

After the triumph of their gorgeous little Net chair at London design week, the complete range from MARK of Cornwall is now online.  And their freestanding slatted timber screen is a stand-out. Designed by Dylan Freeth and inspired by the “wide distant horizons of Cornwall’s north coast”, Horizon is a beautiful, useful thing.  As many out there would attest, a good screen is hard to find and what I especially love about this one is the way the rails are spaced to give extra privacy to those at seated at a table. The screen comes in two heights (so clever) and can be used singly or in multiples to create a shallow zig-zag layout.  Lovely.

Outdoor Entertaining At Home

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

It’s that time of year – when outdoor entertaining comes to the fore, and we all look for ways to better live, and host others in our own homes. The team at Ikea recently moved in with a panel of Aussie families to better understand their needs. Some resulting outdoor entertaining ideas are as follows:

·        Purchase multi-use furniture that works outside, and can provide extra seating inside.

·        Use accessories to coordinate indoor and outdoor areas.

·        Mirrors will make a small space appear bigger, and can reflect outdoor elements inside.

·        Present food in gorgeous dishes, and allow people to serve themselves.

·        Freeze mint leaves in ice cubes, and add to drinks.

·        Give the kids colourful plastic crockery and cutlery – we love the Kalas range.

·        Place rubbish bins outside to help with the clean-up.

Vegetal Chair | Silla Vegetal

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

Can you plant a chair? You can. In 19th century North America young trees were shaped over the course of several years until they adopted the contours of a chair. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec were so fascinated by this traditional technique that they came up with the idea of designing a “grown chair.” What has to grow needs time and as such the Vegetal Chair was created in an unusually long design process.

Now, four years after the first idea emerged, the chair of fibre-reinforced polyamide is about to be presented by Vitra. Flat branches extend and interweave into an asymmetrical, irregular circle-shaped seating shell. The woven strips are stabilized by ribs which grow downwards and merge with the legs. Viewed from the rear the Vegetal Chair looks like a leaf with several stalks and numerous veins branching off.
