There is a debate currently raging on design blogs everywhere about the ethics of Los Angeles’ company Modernica advertising their fibreglass shell chair (among other pieces) as an authentic and original design, when it is in fact unlicensed. On their website, without mentioning ‘Eames’ they state the following;
“the classic 1950 Fiberglass Arm Chair, often referred to as the most significant furniture design of the 20th century, is being produced by Modernica in Los Angeles, using much of the original equipment that produced the original chairs”.
Much of the discussion is focused on a letter Eames Demetrious wrote regarding the advertising of Modernica to Dwell magazine. You can read the letter here.
Perhaps the key issue is that many people are misled to believe that they are buying an original Eames chair. Although this debate is taking place mostly on American blog sites, there are also stockists of Modernica fibreglass chairs in Australia. Living Edge is the only showroom in Australia that has the Herman Miller license and sells the authentic Eames shell chair which is now manufactured with a recyclable plastic shell as the Eames Office believes this would be in line with Charles and Ray’s environmental concerns.
