Is my job at risk from the credit crunch?

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

I just read that the American treasury has rejected a $700bn proposal from the US government to bailout the current financial crisis that is hitting our globe on a major level. This is getting scary now! What if the credit crunch gets even worse than it already is? The first thing that came into my head for some reason was my own job! Is it in danger? I work at a carpet company in London called, Allied Carpets and I know that my managers have been stressing out big time over the current economic crisis. After all, it is so expensive to move house these days so who would want to go out and buy carpet!?

Additionally, my company have not been comforted by the recent turmoil that bedroom furniture specialists, MFI have had to deal with. They were recently saved from bankruptcy by a mangement buyout after sales were hit by the property market downturn. Mfi were boughtout by MEP in 2006 for roughly £1 as the property market was in complete turmoil. The buyout also means that their staff can rest easy as they know their jobs are safe from the credit crunch.

I wish I could say the same about my job, I am getting more and more nervous everyday about all this recessions stuff. Everyday it seems that something new and horrific has been announced! Well, I have my fingers crossed and I suppose that is all I can do.

Melted Polppropylene Rope Chair by Tom Price

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

This chair is created by heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a ball of polypropylene rope. The rope begins to liquify as it comes into contact with the heated former and, as it cools, it sets in the shape of a seat creating a contrast in form and texture to the remaining rope. No additional material has been added to make the seat – it is all made from melted rope.

If it unravels I guess you can melt it again.

Idea* Cardboard Products by Tim Brown

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

Everyone has, at one point in their life, used cardboard boxes as a night stand, coffee table, desk, etc. For most people, that point in their life is called “college”. It was perfect because it’s cheap, disposable, easy to move, and does the job. Designer Tim Brown takes this use to the next level. He makes it okay for everyone to keep a full house of cardboard goodness. Each Idea* product is a cardboard construction which opens and constructs into itself, creating the shelf or chair or whatever it says it is on the box. The box is what it is!

“Idea* is a self-initiated final year student project, commenting on the value of waste packaging and the perception of contents. Each box claims to contain a product, but instead can be deconstructed and reconstructed inside out to become its intended contents. After construction it forms a functional product and also a memorable reminder of how little we appreciate the bland, brown cardboard box.”
