Bargaining – To or not to

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

My first bargaining experience was when I was in my 10th standard and my school has planned a trip to Delhi…not trip, an “educational tour” they called it, and yes we learned a lot on it.

We were in the Delhi’s famous Palika Bazaar in the Connaught Place, the underground shopping place in Delhi.

Palika Bazar

Palika Bazar

I liked a leather purse; I thought I will buy it for my Aai (mom) as a gift from Delhi.

I asked the price of it to the shop owner and he calmly replied 1200 rupees.

I moved on, I was carrying 500 rupees in all with me for the entire tour, how could I afford to buy a 1200 rupee purse?

The shop owner followed me, and asked me how much am I interested to pay for it?

I was actually embarrassed, how could I tell him that I cannot afford it.

To my amusement he kept following me, I got irritated with it, and to get rid of him I told him I will not pay him a rupee over 100, for the purse. He smiled, and put the purse in my hand, took hundred rupees and fled away.

I was happy for a moment, but then I was disappointed too, I thought if I would have told him 70- or 50/- or even 10/- I had a chance…

I just loved it, the bargaining thing, and on the entire trip of Delhi-Agra-Mathura-Gwalior

I did a lot of a shopping (read bargaining) I got a T-Shirt for my dad, an eye shade for my younger brother, Agra kay mashoor pethas and still saved 100 rupees. J

But that was it, as I grew up, I started a disliking towards bargaining, I preferred going to one good shop, select an item, pay and get out.

I started getting embarrassed going to shop, with people who liked bargaining.

They just go to a shop, see at least a hundred of kind, and ask the price, bargain, and get out of the shop without actually buying anything, and on top of it, they will tell the shop owner, we will buy it from the next shop, or the previous shopkeeper was selling the same stuff at half the price.

Recently, I went out with my family to buy some furniture.

First we went to one of the biggest furniture shop, in my city, as it was running a 50% flat discount on furniture.

We spent at least an hour in the 6 floor shop and came out empty handed.

Then we went to 4 small retail shops and factories, where the furniture is actually made.

My wife and my mother bargained a lot.

And finally we got what we wanted. Better quality furniture at an amazing price, nearly half of the price we saw at the 50% flat discount, biggest shop. J

I was irritated and was sulking when my wife and mom were bargaining at all the shops, but finally I was very happy bloke and wallet was still a heavy entity. J

Still, I would prefer to go to a “No Bargain” shop, call it my laziness to go to, too many shops, or my embarrassment to bargain.

The biggest disadvantage of bargaining is, you are never happy with the bargain, when you come out of the shop you think you could have got it at a lesser price.

Bargaining is an art, is a skill, some people are good at it, while some stay away.

What to do with that damn old couch?

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

Do you have an article of furniture, a love seat or couch that you want to get rid of but don’t think anyone would pay for it?  You dream of having a fancy new modern couch in the colour of your choice but feel guilty when faced with the fact that you’d have to throw yours out?  Or maybe you were like me, you had a couch with a great structure by your wonderful feline friends took a liking to it, destroyed it and now you don’t know what to do?

Wait, before you throw it out and contribute to our every growing landfill problems, why not consider reupholstering it? I did.

I had a great sofa bed couch that I paid more than $1200 for but because my cats had torn the living day lights out of it, I didn’t even think I’d get $200 for it if I sold it on Craigs list and that bothered me because deep down, she really was a good couch.  Giving it to family wasn’t an option as sending it to Vancouver would cost way more than it was worth so I was faced with the dilemma of “what do I do with it?”

I did a little research a realised that reupholstering was the best option.  If the couch structure is good, reupholsterers can make a better quality couch then what you could purchase these days. They completely redo the foam, the lining and the fabric.  They also use better quality ingredients so the couch ends up lasting longer too.  And dare I mention that their craftsmanship is much better then the couches that are made on assembly lines in China these days?

I knew nothing about it but figured it couldn’t cost that much. I took to the the yellow pages online and started searching for reupholstering companies in my neighbourhood.  Most wanted you to send them a picture by email in order to figure out how much material they would need in order to give you a quote.

Ha ha, silly me, I thought it couldn’t cost more than say, oh I don’t know, $200-$300? Well, in reality, it cost almost as much as a new couch, but then I had to tell myself that the quality is so much better and I would save my couch from ending up in the landfill.

So if you call a re-upholsterer, don’t expect great customer service, someone to sell you on the idea of how amazing reupholstering is or how you are saving the environment.  They are craftsmen and could care less about great phone skills but boy do they do a great job. My guy even threw in extra arm covers!

The guy came to my house with fabric samples and I even did tests by rubbing pets hair on them then vacuumed it up to see how easy it was. He didn’t care. He was knowledgeable about the durability and because he wasn’t a “salesmen”, didn’t hide anything from me. He was even upfront about the cost of fabric and his profit, which when you count the hours it takes to reupholster a couch, isn’t much.

All in all, I can say I was very pleased with the results and would recommend it to anyone. Do check around with different companies/re-upholsterers though. The price varied by $500 depending on who I called. But trust me, it is well worth it.

Has anybody else considered doing it?

The Perfect Office Chair?!

Posted By: Furniture Reporter  //  Category: News

Last weekend, while strolling along Powerplant Mall, Rockwell, there was a display area that showcased ergonomic chairs and furnitures, particularly for children. The showcase was for the new store than opened on the upper level called Ergrokidz. On one side they also had some office furniture displayed and an office chair caught my eye. It was a chair that resembled the Herman Miller Aeron office chair and even the salesperson on hand agreed with me that there were similarities. This chair was brought in by Contract Design and was selling for around Php 32,000 or US$ 711 while the original Aeron chair, depending on the size, would probably cost from US$ 600 to US$ 1,000 which is equivalent to Php 27,000 to Php 45,000.

I first came across the Aeron chair when I chanced it upon seeing snippets of various design firms’ offices such as Fragment Design and Cubism Inc. I thought the design was cool and the seat is covered by a mesh that looks almost metal-like called Pellicle. It is considered to be good for the back and posture of the user as the seat has an ergonomic shape  and the height and back can be easily adjusted. The side arms can be adjusted as well, including the option of totally hiding the arms.

It has been said that the Aeron chair was the symbol of the IT bubble in the 90s and a status symbol for many offices. I’ve came across many reviews and while some are unhappy with the comfort-ability, most are pretty happy with their chairs.  Or they might just be forcing themselves to be happy because they shelled out a lot of money for the chair, hah!

Maybe someday, I shall try it out(I checked their site and they do have dealers here in Manila). If I have the extra cash to blow and it feels good enough, maybe I’ll invest in one.
