A few weeks ago my roommate Lindsey and I purchased a used Nikkala sofa from a nice woman in West Town with exceptional taste in home furnishings. After a relatively successful “lift and maneuver” operation to get it down and into the car, we were excited to get it operational as soon as possible. We also acquired an IKEA Svansbo side table during this trip (courtesy of the woman with exceptional taste and a desire to rid her apartment of all things that reminded her of her ex). Upon setting up the couch and the table I fell in love with both items.

When I went on line to search for my table’s one true mate (i.e. a coffee table), and a new wardrobe for my couch (i.e. slipcovers) I discovered that IKEA had discontinued both items.

WTF?

Clearly they are both quality items- enforced by the on-line complaints of dozens of hurt IKEA customers looking for the exact same items as me! On one hand I was happy that so many other people love my couch, and that they still seem to be in good shape after years of wear and tear, but mostly I was just pissed at the lack of slipcovers available to me.

One company, Bemz.com, charges outrageous amounts of money for fancy new Nikkala slipcovers (pictured below with a Svansbo table).

Alas, I do not have $300 for a houndstooth slipcover. If I really felt like it, I suppose I could come up with a pattern for new slipcovers from the old ones but that reeks of effort. Also, I cannot sew.

Meanwhile my poor side table is sitting in the corner lonely as hell without a coffee table to keep it company. According to the internet the majority of used Svansbo coffee tables exist in Canada and Sweden- I live near neither of these countries (Ok, I guess Illinois is close enough to Canada, but it’s still too damn far away). Even a search of the entire Craig’s List database yielded no results. ZERO.  If I was rich and had a lot of time on my hands I could commission a custom table to match the one I have.  I have neither money nor time.

I have resorted to posting a “Wanted” ad on CL for the Svansbo table.  Maybe the table gods will smile upon me and provide me with a seller of this mystical furniture unicorn.  Until then milk crates will have to do the trick.
